1853
- Legislation passes the creation of a board of seven trustees to oversee building of the seminary, appoint faculty, organize the curriculum, and disburse funds. top

1859
- Board elects its initial faculty of five professors, appoints William T. Sherman as the seminary's superintendent and professor of engineering and David F. Boyd as professor of ancient languages. top

1860
- Jan. 2, the Louisiana State Seminary of Learning opens with five professors, a few months later the board changes the name to Louisiana State Seminary of Learning and Military Academy.
- Nov. 1, Seminary's second session, has 130 cadets, Sherman promises to continue as superintendent unless Louisiana seceded. top

1861
- Jan. 10, Louisiana's state militia seizes the US arsenal at Baton Rouge
- Jan. 26, Louisiana legislature passes its Ordinance of Secession
- Feb. 20, Sherman resigns as president of the seminary
- March, Lincoln assumes Presidency of U.S. top

1862

- Apr. 1, Board reopens seminary with George Lay, acting supervisor top

1863

- Apr. 1, Student rebellion
- Apr. 23, Session dissloves, school remains closed until the end of the war. top

1865

- Oct. 2, Louisiana State Seminary and Military Academy officially reopens; organizes the Special School of Engineering; Samuel Lockett hired as Professor of Engineering.

1867

- American Society of Civil Engineers established top

1869

- June 30, Louisiana State Seminary's first commencement
- Oct. 15, seminary's main building burns down
- November, Classes relocate to the Institute for the Deaf, Blind and Dumb in Baton Rouge; the school remains at this temporary address for eighteen years. top

1870

- Louisiana State School renamed Louisiana State University top

1876

- Louisiana State University merges with Louisiana State Agricultural and Mechanical College top

1880

- July 1, David Boyd accused of mismanagement, forced out of presidency of LSU; board hires William P. Johnston as President of LSU; American Society of Mechanical Engineers established top

1883

- Jan. 19, Johnston leaves LSU to organize the privately endowed Tulane University (previously The University of Louisiana); board appoints Nicholson to fill vacancy

1884

- Nicholson resigns as President, but remains as mathematics professor; board rehires David Boyd as President and Professor of Civil Engineering; American Institute of Electrical Engineers founded top

1885

- Sugar experiment station organized in Kenner, LA; William Stubbs is hired to direct station; Stubbs efforts help relieve financial pressure on the Kenner Station; aids in development of the Chemical Engineering department by focusing research on sugar analysis; four year general engineering degree offered. top

1886

- Jan. 13, Mechanical lab burns down, new lab constructed; US Army barracks and 200 acres are donated to LSU;
- December, Boyd resigns a second time, Thomas Boyd (his brother) takes the temporary appointment of President for seven months; Nicholson takes Presidency again top

1890-1891

- Cadets in the mechanical department are paid ten cents an hour to help maintain buildings top

1907

- Electrical Engineering officially established top

1908

- American Institute of Chemical Engineers founded; first formal course in Chemical Engineering offered at LSU; LSU formally organizes departments into colleges; Colleges include College of Engineering, Arts and Sciences, Agriculture, Audubon Sugar School, a Law School and Teachers College. LSU offered instruction in the four major engineering fields, civil, mechanical, electrical, and chemical. top
