With
great pleasure I welcome you to the College of Engineering
at Louisiana State University. Your visit is very important
to us; therefore I would like to use the opportunity to tell
you about our College. We have attempted to accomplish this
through the web sites of the College and individual Departments,
Research Centers, and Operating Units. Please, take the time
to look over the pages and discover who we are.
We are a College
of eight academic departments. We offer degree programs that
lead to the B.S., M.S., and the Ph.D. We are the flagship
engineering college in the State of Louisiana and among the
largest engineering colleges in the United States. Our students
come from all over the world and from several other states
in the Nation. The features that attract them to our program
are the quality of education we provide, a solid research
base, diverse students population, dynamic social and cultural
setting, and the opportunity for involvement in extra curricular
activities in one of the most beautiful university campuses
in the U.S. The evidence of the quality of our research and
educational programs is clearly seen in the number of our
alumni that hold key positions in industry, including CEOs
of major corporations and the quality publications contributed
by the faculty to archival journals. The College has a large
alumni base and these alumni work for a variety of industries,
that includes construction, energy, petrochemical, manufacturing,
transportation, telecommunication, information, semiconductor,
agriculture, environment, pharmaceutical, education, logistics,
software, government, and consulting to name only a few. The
successes enjoyed by the alumni have also benefited the college
in several ways through gifts and endowments that benefit
the students, the faculty, and the academic programs.
The faculty is engaged in a host of research that ranges from
the macro world to the micro world and from the technical
to biological and socio-economic systems. The range of research
areas is as diverse as the College faculty themselves are.
Research projects conducted by the faculty are funded by a
host of government agencies and companies. Many of our faculty
members are leaders in their disciplines and are internationally
known for their innovations and contributions to the field
of engineering. As a student, this provides the opportunity
to work with eminent scholars and other well-qualified fellow
students that have been attracted to the College because of
our name recognition. As a company with an engineering problem
to solve, this provides a powerful storehouse of engineering
knowledge and expertise for problem solving.
The quality of our laboratory and physical facilities for
education and research is consistent with our rating as a
Research I Extensive University, the highest rating accorded
to any university in the nation. Whether your interest is
in the field of computing, power systems, civil infrastructure
or the design of intelligent systems, you will find state-of-the-art
laboratory facilities in the College and other units of the
University to satisfy your need and curiosity. We are a College
on the move. To us, the 21st century provides a lot of opportunities
to alter how we relate to the physical world around us. For
us, this means investment in nontraditional and emerging areas
of engineering such as nanotechnology, biotechnology, information
technology, intelligent materials, biomedical system, environment,
infrastructure, and hazard engineering. It is a great time
to be an engineer. But more importantly, it is a great time
to be part of a growing college with a history of accomplishments
such as the LSU College of Engineering.
So, if your visit with us today is for the purpose of identifying
a quality engineering program to continue your education or
seeking for a group of faculty to collaborate with on a unique
research project, you are definitely in the right place. We
invite you to contact us if we can be of further help in your
search. We look forward to hearing from you if you consider
such a contact necessary for your needs.
Sincerely,
Pius J. Egbelu, Ph.D.
