Secure File Tranfer Protocol (SFTP)
What is SFTP?
SFTP is an FTP service which is "tunneled" in
an encrypted network connection. This encryption technique
allows for more secure information tranfers.
Why not FTP?
Unlike SFTP, the FTP service sends your userid and password
unencrypted over the network. Any hacker who is "sniffing"
the network can obtain your userid and password. SFTP sets
up an encrypted connection first before asking for your
userid and password. This way the hacker will only see "garbage".
When is this new service going to be brought online?
The COE Computing Support Staff definitely appreciates the
inconvenience that not having FTP causes. We are working
very hard on setting up SFTP on our home directory servers
and are close to bringing the service online. Stay tuned
for more.
Is there going to be anything I need to use SFTP?
In short... yes. Just as you have a client for FTP, you
will need one for SFTP. When we bring SFTP services online,
we will also make available this software for you. Again,
please stay tuned.
I have other questions which are not listed here?
As always, we have an email address, support@eng.lsu.edu,
which is designed for just such a purpose. Please contact
your COE Computing Support Staff via this address for questions
about this item and any other COE computing items.
